Escaping From Houdini (Stalking Jack the Ripper)

Review

Escaping From Houdini (Stalking Jack the Ripper)

Kerri Maniscalco astounds readers again in the newest addition to her bestselling Stalking Jack the Ripper series, ESCAPING FROM HOUDINI. After their terrifying case in Romania, Audrey Rose Wadsworth and her partner Thomas Cresswell set sail to New York aboard the RMS Etruria. The luxurious ship is more than simply means of transportation; they are joined by a magnificent carnival to shock and amaze. The carnival contains magic of all sorts from the mysterious ringmaster Mephistopheles and a young escape artist, Harry Houdini, meant to wow the passengers. It does more than simply wow as the carnival provides a perfect distraction as a murderer begins to strike aboard the ship.

As the journey crawls on and more bodies are discovered, Audrey must use all of her forensic skills to discover who is doing these killings before it is too late. But aboard a ship where illusions are everywhere she has no idea what --- or who --- she can trust.

"Readers of Maniscalco are no stranger to magnificent writing, but ESCAPING FROM HOUDINI takes it to a new level....Maniscalco transforms a simple trip overseas to a haunt of terrifying proportions."

Readers of Maniscalco are no stranger to magnificent writing, but ESCAPING FROM HOUDINI takes it to a new level. Aboard a constantly moving carnival ship, nothing is certain, from Audrey’s closest companions to the magical new ones she meets. Somehow, use of magic, no doubt, Maniscalco transforms a simple trip overseas to a haunt of terrifying proportions. With gruesome murders, this book is not for the faint of heart, but for those who will gasp in awe at every new twist that comes on every page.

Audrey Rose has always been a fascinating character, and in the third book in the series, she has truly grown from the rather innocent girl she once was. Her stubbornness, endless curiosity and quick wit entertain as well as connect each reader who understands the endless work to be oneself. Not only has her knowledge of forensics grown as each book progresses, she has become a proficient detective in all manners. Yet don’t forget, Audrey is still a young adult, unused to the trials of love and must try to navigate through its murky waters as the Etruria crashes through the waters of the Atlantic. Her multifaceted person continues to delight as she inspects a horrific crime scene as comfortably as she dons a gown and gloves. Despite the frowned upon profession she has fallen in love with, she still maintains her ladylike habits as all young women of her time would.

My absolute favorite thing about reading the Stalking Jack the Ripper series is that every book immerses the reader into the world, and ESCAPING FROM HOUDINI does just that. I was not simply reading a wonderful book. I felt the rocking of the ship, the fire from the carnival, smelled the blood from the victims. But most powerful is Maniscalco’s ability to make readers feel. From angst to terror to happiness, I was on the edge of my seat every second as I read, riding the emotional roller coaster that Audrey was strapped into every second of every page. As more and more clues were uncovered, and more and more victims were found, I could feel my heart beating faster and faster. Even knowing I was alone as I read, I felt as if there was someone just around the corner.

In a masterful display of mystery and adventure, ESCAPING FROM HOUDINI will leave every reader itching for more. But as you read you must remember the most important rule of sleight of hand; distract your audience so they never see the real trick happening right in front of their eyes.
